fun facts about vanilla

vanilla isn't boring

  • Orchid Bloom

Vanilla, the only member of the orchid flower family that bears fruit, has a natural elegance that makes it stand out among other spices.

  • Island Only

Currently the second most costly spice in the world, vanilla has a special relationship to Madagascar, specifically the island of Reunion, where an astounding 75% of the world's vanilla is grown.

  • The Patience of Nature

The road to vanilla requires careful patience. The little flower that gives rise to the vanilla bean only blooms for a single day, and it takes at least three years for the beans to mature. After this elaborate cultivation, they go through an arduous 4- to 6-month process of hand-picking, curing, wrapping, and drying.

  • High Quality Selection

Selecting the highest-quality vanilla beans requires a sensory investigation. The best beans smell well, look glossy, have a dark brown or black color, are moist and supple, and are rather long.

  • Significant as Precious Metals

In today's market, the worth of vanilla beans is as significant as precious metals, with their cost by weight aligning with the value of silver. This subtle reminder underlines the rarity and sophistication encapsulated within every Madagascar Vanilla Bean used in our rum.

behind the operation

Madi the Lemur is our beloved mascot and is also the Brand Ambassador for Madi’s Mission. Madi’s Mission is to raise awareness on the rapid deforestation tragedy that is happening in Madagascar. Because of ever shrinking natural habitat for lemurs they are now the most endangered mammals on earth and face extinction within the next 20-25years!! 90% of the natural forest in Madagascar has been destroyed….Help us SAVE the remaining 10%!!! A portion of each cake will go back to Madi’s Mission and help reverse the effects of the deforestation that has already been done. Get involved by visiting MadisMission.org
